It’s the other side of the ball, though, that’s of the utmost interest – and concern – in the here and now.

Auburn senior wide receiver Duke Williams remains on the team, but his status with the Tigers remains up in the air. And when he was absent from the two games preceding AU’s loss to Alabama in the Iron Bowl because of a knee injury.

Auburn was without a key member of its offense at practice for the second day in a row on Saturday, August 8.

“(Williams) had a discipline issue that we’re taking care of”, Malzahn said.

The Tigers have national championship aspirations this season, but it is hard to envision that happening without their most talented receiver on the field.

Marcello also noted that Williams is expected to return to the field, but the coach avoided providing any specifics about the return date when answering questions and said, “I will let you know when he’s back”. “I’ll make that decision”.

Williams, who is 6-foot-2, 224 pounds, caught 45 passes for 730 yards and five touchdowns last season in 10 games. Gus Malzahn has opened up fall camp with a clear goal in mind and is keeping on his team to stay focused.
