Police say after a police supervisor arrived, one of the suspects, a 36-year-old man, became combative and managed to get into the first officer’s squad vehicle. Lund said the officer was “not getting cooperation from the two individuals”.

The officer struggled with the suspect to get him out of the auto, but the suspect got the squad vehicle in gear and subsequently hit the supervisor’s vehicle. He then left the squad auto and took another vehicle from a woman, who was not hurt.

A fight at the squad auto ensued as the officer attempted to get the 36-year-old away from the vehicle.

“The contact that the officer was having with these two individuals to go very bad”, said Sgt. Dave Lund, public information officer for the Appleton Police Department at a news conference Saturday night. The suspect struck a second officer’s auto. The 36-year-old then either backed into or struck the Grand Chute police supervisor’s vehicle.

The suspect started to drive away, but other Grand Chute officers responding to the scene arrived and opened fire on the fleeing suspect, hitting him.

Lund says he wasn’t sure of the conditions of the officer who was hurt, or the suspect who was shot. The man fled the area, drove onto Interstate 41 and was later stopped by the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. The man was ultimately arrested and treated for his injuries.
