Yankees close to Chapman trade

The dynamic of having Papelbon and Chapman being the last ones out of the bullpen would scare any opponent, not to mention any team they would meet in a hypothetical postseason series.

Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post reported that the Nationals “want in on” Chapman. It seems the Yankees are interested in the Nationals right hander Joe Ross, who has been out for a number of weeks due to a shoulder injury. Heyman writes the Nationals have fallen behind in the race, but Keith Law has the details on a potential deal. Koda Glover was recently sent back down after a brief stint for his Major League Baseball debut. Regardless of who the third prospect is, it’s a solid offer from Washington.

The Indians are a little tight on money at the moment, but they might be the favorites to land Chapman.

The Yankees also are scouting Indians left-handed pitching prospect Justus Sheffield, according to ESPN’s Keith Law. The Yankees have asked all remaining teams to submit their best offers and NY is likely targeting highly touted pitching prospects in exchange for a pitcher they will have the option to resign without compensation penalties at the end of the year anyway.

The Cubs and Rangers have reportedly been scouting Chapman since early July. Andrew Baggarly Tweets that the feeling around the Giants is that “momentum is elsewhere” on Chapman and a deal is unlikely.

“I think (6-4 would be) a pretty good homestand when you consider the teams that we’ve played and we lost the first two, but we need to continue to play better and probably do better than 6-4 as we move forward”, Girardi said.

Agent Scott Boras has often handled his clients the same way in the winters in which he has multiple players at the same position: Rather than market a group of pitchers simultaneously in the offseason, general managers have noted that he has often pushed them one at a time in discussion with teams. There’s also been a “mystery team” floated.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the Yankees aren’t high on the Giants’ farm system compared to the other teams in the mix.
