Kenya Valued Partner of India, Says Modi; Sign Seven Agreements

Making the announcements in the Tanzanian capital of Dar-es-Salaam, visiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India would remain a trusted partner in meeting the resource-rich country’s development priorities.

“Given the importance of cooperation in education and in response to the offer by India to increase scholarships for Kenyans, President Uhuru Kenyatta appreciated the role of Indian universities in training Kenyan graduates who are making positive contributions to the economy”.

He said memorandum of understanding on Defence Cooperation signed by the two sides today would strengthen the institutional cooperation between their defence establishments.

They two leaders are also expected to sign many agreements to boost health co-operation, investment and trade, as well as combatting counterfeit products. “And, do so based on your needs and priorities”, he said.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Prime Minister Modi witnessed the signing of the agreements. “Two can become complementary since our commitment is to make the future of the people and since the people are largely the same”, he said.

Kenya will also receive Sh4. In his civic reception at the South African city, Modi spoke about how cricket improves relations between the two countries. “And as a friend, we are ready and willing to share our experiences, our expertise, our capacities and our technology with Tanzania”.

Mr. Modi said that India and Kenya both agreed that terrorism and spread of radical Ideology is a threat to the world.

Esipisu said Kenya would push to have its exports “granted preferential status by the Indian authorities”.

Kenya’s oldest newspaper and the second-largest in circulation, The Standard, has asked the Kenyatta administration to push India to open its doors to goods from Kenya.

Africa was the land which started with the identity of Indian Diaspora.

Earlier the prime minister visited Tanzania, South Africa and Mozambique as part of the five-day tour. He said Indians were among foreigners sent in Kenya to build the first railway, adding that this was a floodgate for Indians to open opportunities for Kenya and Kenyan people.

On arrival at the State House yesterday, Mr Modi chose to join his host in honing their skills at traditional drum beating.

An 80-member delegation of business leaders under the aegis of industry chamber Ficci that is accompanying Modi on his official visit to four African nations organised the India-Tanzania Business Forum and India-Kenya Business Forum on July 10 and 11 at Dar-e-Salaam and Nairobi respectively.
