Trump’s convention pledge: Safety will be restored
Donald Trump’s daughter promised Thursday that her father will fight for equal pay for women and affordable childcare for parents, issues the Republican nominee has rarely if ever addressed on the campaign trail.

Paul Manafort, Mr Trump’s campaign chair, called the popular governor of this key general election swing state “petulant” and “embarrassing to his party in OH”. “If they want a party of protection, we welcome them”.
“I don’t have any time for people who break commitments that are fundamental to Republicans in this nation, and I’m very disappointed with what he did”.
The chairman of the Hillary for America campaign, John Podesta, attacked Mr Trump’s speech as divisive. He again blasted what he called the unfair trade tactics of competitors like China. He called for a ban on immigration from any nation that “has been touched by terrorism”, until the US can better vet applicants.
He needs a post-convention bounce in public opinion polls to remain competitive with Clinton, who will be in the spotlight next week in Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention.
Political conventions are supposed to stoke and showcase party unity behind a presidential nominee whose virtues are unalloyed.
The 70-year-old NY businessman will use his speech to formally accept the Republican presidential nomination.
Indeed, Clinton was aggressively attacked throughout the four-day Republican convention, with delegates repeatedly chanting, “Lock her up”. But speaking off the cuff comes with its own risks, particularly with Trump trying to show a general-election audience he can be trusted with the presidency.
“We will be a country of generosity and warmth, but we will also be a country of law and order”, he said. The crowd started chanting, “Trump!”.
Mocking the pro-Clinton slogan – “I’m With Her” – Trump told delegates: “I’m with you, the American people: I am your voice”.
And as in previous rallies, Trump had to pause at one point as a protester heckled him and had to be removed by security.
This is “a moment of crisis for our nation”, the one-time reality TV host railed from the stage of the Quicken Loans Arena. “I have seen him fight for his employees”, she said.
Mr Trump also claimed those who “felt the Bern” would flock to his camp instead. “Great love in the arena!” “Other than a small group of people who have suffered massive and embarrassing losses, the party is VERY united”, he wrote on Twitter Thursday.
Among the children, Ivanka is the one who is often the bridge to women voters and seems to have the mission of selling her father’s softer side.
Although Perry had been one of the first Republicans to blast Trump early in the primary season, he’s now a full-throated backer of Trump.
When The New York Times asked the candidate about the prospect of a Russian attack on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies in the Baltic States, Trump said he would authorize help only after deciding whether those countries “have fulfilled their obligations to us”.
Donald Trump has vowed as president to confront and repel the multiple threats facing the United States, as he accepted the Republican nomination. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Trump “is essentially telling Russians/other bad actors” that the United States “is not fully committed to supporting North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance”.
On a telephone call with Cruz’s daughters after the speech, Roe said the girls asked their father why he got booed.
Cruz “was trying to reach those people who say ‘Never Trump, ‘” said Emily Redditt, an alternate delegate from Texas, as she defended her senator.
On Thursday evening, delegates in the convention hall were livid Cruz that exhorted the room to vote its “conscience” in November.
Mr Trump and his aides have been unable to put to rest questions about whether they can mount a sophisticated campaign to take on Mrs Clinton’s well-oiled operation.
