BOSTON – Kyle Gibson put an end to a two-game hitting outburst by the Red Sox, allowing just a pair of hits in the first inning and none over the next seven as the Minnesota Twins edged Boston 2-1 Friday night.
Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer and barely missed another during one of Cincinnati’s final home games before the non-waiver trade deadline. The plunking came on the first pitch of his next at-bat after a solo homer.
“I hope these [opposing] pitchers understand that if they’re going to continue to hit our players, especially when it looks like – and it looked like that in San Francisco and it looked like that last night – that the pitcher hit him because he hit a home run, there’s going to be some retribution at some point”.

Straily (5-6) made his fourth straight quality start, settling down after a rough first inning. He’s faced the Reds one other time, taking the loss previous year while giving up three runs in six innings.

Godley (3-1) became the first pitcher in franchise history to reach seven career wins as a starter in as few as 10 starts. He hasn’t gone more than five innings in any of his last three starts.
