White Sox suspend Chris Sale for ‘destroying team equipment’

White Sox pitcher Chris Sale was sent home before their game against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night for what the team called a “clubhouse incident” – but several reports said Sale was upset at the prospect of wearing a retro uniform, so he cut up the jerseys so no one could wear them.

He was also suspended five games by Major League Baseball last season for his role in a brawl at Kansas City that started with a flare-up between teammate Adam Eaton and the Royals’ Yordano Ventura.

The White Sox took the scheduled game right after Detroit wiped out a 4-1 deficit in the ninth. The Sox started the day with Eaton’s walk-off single in the suspended game, then jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead off Anibal Sanchez as Eaton continued his reign of terror. Rodon injured his wrist when he tripped on the steps in the White Sox dugout before a game against the Braves July 8 at U.S. Cellular Field, which landed him on the 15-day disabled list.

“I got no sense of that from Chris”, Hahn said. “Obviously you guys probably know what happened, but for me as a player, and in our clubhouse, we’re going to keep in in-house”. To get the big hit and have everyone rush out there, especially with what we’ve had the past couple of days.

The White Sox have been in a tailspin since a 23-10 start. Sale decided he wasn’t having it and responded by trying to cut up the team’s jerseys in protest.

Eaton’s single made a victor of David Robertson (1-2), who got the final four outs. Chris Sale expressed his displeasure with the White Sox calling them “Backstabbers”.

White Sox right-hander David Robertson (2-2) earned both victories Sunday despite allowing three home runs in the finale.

Cameron Maybin had two hits and scored two runs for Detroit. Melky Cabrera’s single off of Bruce Rondon plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Pale Hose a 5-4 triumph in the regularly scheduled game. The suspension likely won’t affect teams’ interest in the left-hander, who’s 14-3 with a 3.18 ERA, but it might cause them to ask for a sale on their asking price.

“(Saturday) crossed a different line”, Hahn said. “I walked from the bullpen into the dugout and I have to wait and look around and see if everyone else it ready and then you go”.

Tigers: Manager Brad Ausmus said no decision has been made on whether LHP Daniel Norris (oblique) will rejoin the team Monday in Boston.
