Ansbach, Germany, rocked by explosion

The blast – which killed at least one person – was suspected of being a gas explosion.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann was being briefed about the incident, the spokesman said.

Ansbach police could not immediately be reached for further comment.

The man was already known to the police, he said, because he had twice been treated in a hospital after trying to take his life.

Unconfirmed reports state a man with a rucksack was denied entry to the music festival shortly before the explosion ripped through the popular night spot.

A dozen people were injured in the explosion, three of them seriously, added a spokeswoman, without giving any more details.

Earlier in the day, police say a Syrian refugee killed a woman and injured two other people with a machete.

“We don’t know at the moment, if the perpetrator just wanted to commit suicide or if his goal was also to kill other people”.

Some 2,500 people have been evacuated from the concert after the explosion went off in front of a bar in the centre of Ansbach at around 10:00 pm (2000 GMT). He may have targeted the nearby pop music festival – until security guards at the festival’s entrance turned him away.

Mr Hermann said the man, whose identity has not yet been released, had been living in Ansbach for some time.

After the Munich attack, Herrmann urged the German government to allow the country’s military to be deployed to support police during attacks. He killed himself after he set off an explosion.

The attacker has been identified as a 27-year-old asylum seeker from Syria.

It followed Friday’s shooting rampage in Munich that left 10 dead, including the 18-year-old shooter.

The bombing was being treated as attempted murder by the Bavarian state prosecutor, but authorities were still investigating whether the crime was an act of terrorism.
