Fire Crews Mount Aggressive Attack On Cold Springs Fire

Investigators with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office say 28-year-old Jimmy Andrew Suggs and 26-year-old Zackary Ryan Kuykendall of Vinemont, have been charged with 4th Degree Arson, a class four felony.

The two men are both from Vinemont and have been charged with fourth degree arson.

The road closures on the Peak to Peak Highway and Sugarloaf Road were lifted on Monday, though Boulder Canyon Drive and Magnolia Road remain closed, as aerial crews are conducting water drops over the road as the concern for spot fires remains.

Fire investigators and sheriff’s detectives say the fire originated at some point shortly before 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at an illegal campsite on private property near the intersection of Peak to Peak Highway and Cold Springs Road.

NEDERLAND, Colo. (AP) – Firefighters worked in gusty winds on Monday to try to stop the spread of a wildfire believed to have been sparked by a smoldering campfire left behind by transients camping out near a Colorado mountain community.

Firefighters are battling windy conditions and the blaze.

Both men have been booked and lodged at the Boulder County Jail.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said Suggs, Kuykendall and Elizabeth Burdeshaw, 21, started a campfire that burned overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

More than 1,000 homes in the area were evacuated.

Two Alabama men have been taken into custody for their alleged role in the instigation of the Cold Springs Fire near Nederland in Colorado.

The fire was 5 percent contained after beginning June 19 and charring federal and state lands about 25 miles north of Walden.

Officials said about 200 firefighters were on the ground and 12 aircraft are fighting the fire from above, with more help on the way.

“We went outside and looked and saw an inferno in the sky”, Kennedy said. A fire ban has been in effect since late Saturday afternoon.

National Forest officials said the fire is burning in heavy timber killed by beetles.

More evacuations pending for wildfire near Nederland
