Diamondbacks Hit 4 Homers, Hold Off Reds 9-8

“A little bit more consistency”, said first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. “We had guys on nearly every inning, it felt like (except the ninth)”. He’d had an all-around solid afternoon when he stepped to the plate in the Bottom of the 9th – 1 for 3 with a walk, a ribbie, a stolen base, and a pair of runs scored to that point – but he then blasted a 3-run homer into the first row of the RF seats in his final at bat, the kind of feel-good story that bookended perfectly his meteoric entrance to the Cincinnati lineup that summer night back in 2008.

The game-time temperature was 91 degrees under sunny skies. The Diamondbacks’ bats were hot, too.

“We need to play better”, manager Chip Hale said. They had won five straight at Great American Ball Park before the loss on Friday.

“We played a great series, we really did”, said Bruce. “We were in it right up until the end today”. “Especially in a ballpark like this”.

The first inning lasted 38 minutes and featured 61 combined pitches.

Arizona’s Chris Owings was activated off the disabled list and singled home a run in the first inning. Hamilton is 9 for 22 during a five-game hitting streak.

TORONTO – James Paxton pitched seven strong innings to win for the first time in three starts, Seth Smith doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Blue Jays 2-1 on Friday night, snapping Toronto’s winning streak at three. Arizona is also 4-1 in Godley’s last five starts on grass, and 4-1 in Godley’s last five starts overall. He allowed five earned runs and 10 hits. “He gave up some runs”.

John Jaso had two of the Pirates’ three hits, including their only one for extra bases (a leadoff double in the second).

Verrett took a shutout into the sixth for NY but departed after giving up a two-run homer to Christian Yelich, his 10th. It was a situation where we were a homer away from walking them off.

Arizona regained the lead when Castillo belted a three-run homer in the third, his 11th of the season, to make the score 5-2.

DENVER – Jon Gray pitched seven strong innings, Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story hit two-run homers off relievers after starter Julio Teheran left because of an injury, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 on Friday night. Goldschmidt snapped an 0-for-6 skid in the series with his 17th home run leading off the fifth to put Arizona ahead 6-5.It was the 22nd homer allowed this season by Finnegan (5-8), who finished with six earned runs allowed and seven hits in five innings. The Diamondbacks’ hit parade continued against right-hander Ross Ohlendorf in the sixth.

There’s not a lot to get excited about in this game honestly, but I’ll go with the home-town Reds for the finale win. “Got a fastball inner half and was able to hit it good enough to get it out of there”. Jay Bruce heads the charge on 92 hits with 52 runs, 20 homers and 69 RBI.

“There were a lot of misses”, Price said. “He tried to go in to righties”. He’s faced the Reds one other time, taking the loss a year ago while giving up three runs in six innings. His two-run double to left with the bases loaded in the second drew rousing cheers from the bevy of Cubs fans visiting Milwaukee. But, Zac Curtis struck out Bruce to end the inning. The only thing on my mind is playing baseball. “Hopefully, we can build on it”.

For Sunday’s game, the Diamondbacks will be whipping out Zack Godley. INF Jose Peraza started at shortstop for Cincinnati in place of Zack Cozart. It’s the second time he’s faced Arizona as a starter.
