Lara Sobel was shot twice and killed outdoors an workplace of the state Division for Youngsters and Households in Barre as she was leaving work Friday, authorities say. Herring was tackled outside the building and arrested on a first-degree homicide charge.

Earlier Saturday, police said that at least two of the victims found that morning appeared to have been shot.

A Vermont Department for Children and Families worker was shot dead outside her office by a woman with a hunting rifle reportedly upset after losing custody of her child, authorities said.

A business owner said her surveillance camera caught the DCF shooting as it unfolded. The subsequent morning, a 911 name introduced officers to a Berlin house, the place they discovered three ladies lifeless.

Herring had lost the custody of her only child, a daughter, on July 10, reported NECN.

“That’s one of those things that’s open to interpretation, so I’m going to stay away from it”, Bombardier told The Associated Press.

The three people whose remains were found in the town of Berlin, not far from the state capital Montpelier, were related to Jody Herring, who was arrested on Friday after allegedly fatally shooting an employee of state Department of Children and Families in an ambush-style attack outside the department offices in Barre, Vermont.

Huntley said he did not know Jody Herring because she wasn’t from his side of the family, but the extended family is large throughout central Vermont, and this news dealt a big blow.

Shumlin, who returned early from a vacation to speak on the killings, said the investigation into the deaths of Herring’s relatives was ongoing and declined to release any additional information. “We also know and firmly believe that this was an isolated attack based upon the person we have in custody, who is the alleged perpetrator of these crimes”. Henoted that Rhonda and Regina Herring (the woman’s cousins) were in their 40’s.

“I feel all Vermonters are as shocked, dismayed, horrified and grief-stricken as all of us are”, Shumlin stated. The governor added that he was unable to remember a similar murder in his entire lifetime, especially by the same perpetrator.

Lieutenant Governor Phil Scott said he knew several members of the extended Herring family.

“It is my understanding after talking with a few of her (Jody Herring’s) kin that her father was certainly one of 16 brothers and sisters”.

Authorities say Sobel had handled a case for the state Department for Children and Families in which Herring’s 9-year-old daughter was removed from the home.

Sobel’s co-workers and members of the Vermont State Employees Association planned to hold a vigil Sunday.

Ken Schatz, the commissioner for the Division for Youngsters and Households, referred to as Sobel’s capturing “a heartbreaking tragedy”. He called Sobel “an experienced social worker”.
