The fire’s rapid spread was fueled by “excessive heat, low humidity and extreme dry fuels”, said Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich.

Up the coast, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection firefighters battled the blaze in rugged mountains north of Big Sur. Over 1,673 firefighters are engaged in initial attack. Resources devoted to the firefighting effort include 70 engines, 36 hand crews, nine helicopters and four bulldozers, according to authorities. The Incident Command Post is located at Golden Valley High School.

LOS ANGELES A fast-moving wildfire that has forced hundreds of people to flee from their homes in the drought parched foothills northwest of Los Angeles had blackened some 20,000 acres by Saturday night and was threatening homes and commercial structures, fire officials said. The wildfire was just 10 percent contained less than two days after breaking out near state Route 14.

Some Sand Canyon residents took the evacuation in stride, expressing an appreciation for authorities enforcing a safety directive. Large animals can be evacuated to Hansen Dam in Sylmar or the Jack Bones Equestrian Center, 26983 Tapia Canyon Road Castaic. But unpredictable winds led officials to rescind that decision.

They will remain until all evacuations are lifted and the area is reopened.

Approximately 150 Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department personnel are deployed at the fires as well as Los Angeles Police Department personnel assisting with evacuations. Evacuations are in place. The South Coast Air Quality Management District warned that at times air would reach unhealthy levels.
