Black Lives Matter protests in Syracuse have support from some elected officials

Several rallies are planned in coming weeks including a forum with Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo.

Shaunna Spivey-Spinner, founder of Project X, said the demonstration will attempt to show solidarity following the deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and police officers killed in Dallas.

“At this time in history, it does seem like a black life doesn’t always matter as much as another life”, Johnson says.

“At a minimum, we’re going to have to be watching because that’s really bad stuff and it’s happened a few times”, he said. While many protesters throughout the country have made claims of police misconduct and racism, others have pushed back, arguing that the rush to judgment in a handful of instances unfairly paints all law enforcement as a racist cabal that specifically targets blacks.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said Tuesday he supports having the US attorney general investigate the Black Lives Matter movement, which seeks to bring attention to police shootings of African Americans.

The peaceful Black Lives Matter rally started at the entrance of Meadow Park at about 5:30 p.m.

She said the meeting will address diversifying the police department as well as ways to involve the police with the community.

Mr. Mixon said the advocacy groups do not support black communities.

People at the protest said they’re looking to future and want positive conversations to continue.

“We don’t mean to make them feel in danger we don’t want to cause any kind of violence whatsoever we just want to be respectful”.

“I think it’s good to bring awareness to police brutality”, Watson said. We want peace. We want everybody to come together. “As long as it stays peaceful, there is no problem”.
