Cards beat Dodgers on Adams’ HR in 16th

“That might be my best bolt”, Adams said.

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Mike Mayers reacts after allowing a grand slam to Los Angeles Dodgers’ Adrian Gonzalez, not seen, during the first inning of a baseball game Sunday, July 24, 2016, in St. Louis.

Mike Matheny loaded the Cardinals’ lineup with righthanded hitters to face Dodgers lefty Scott Kazmir in Sunday night’s 7:10 p.m. game at Busch Stadium.

Washington’s Stephen Drew hit a game-ending triple in the ninth inning to lift the Nationals past San Diego 3-2.

The Cardinals got 7 2/3 innings of shutout relief from their bullpen, led by Seth Maness, and got within 9-3 in the second on Tommy Pham’s two-run homer against Kazmir.

That means Matt Holliday will make the start at first base and Randal Grichuk will be in left field.

“I didn’t feel the ball come off the bat”, Adams said. He got the call early Saturday to let him know, he was going north.

He’s made progress this season, holding a 2.94 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP with 43 strikeouts and 19 walks. Kazmir gave up just four hits and a run, walked none and fanned eight in an efficient 88-pitch outing. It was the fifth blown save of the season for Jansen.

Kazmir (9-3) was the beneficiary of this onslaught, lasting five innings on a night where the heat index was 108 degrees at game time. I look for much better play from the Cardinals defense, as well as their offense.

“I did like what I saw”, Matheny said of Socolovich, who turned 30 on Sunday. “It was well done”.

Howie Kendrick followed with a double before Mayers recorded a strikeout and ground out.

Dodgers: RF Yasiel Puig (right hamstring) did not start for the third straight game. The red-hot Turner has seven homers and 17 RBI this month. He allowed three runs on six hits. “So for us to get on him earlier and the home run early there by Adrian was big”. Freeses hit off Severino Gonzalez pushed the lead to three runs, and Francisco Cervelli capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.

PIRATES 7, PHILLIES 4 Gregory Polanco and David Freese hit two-run singles during a five-run fifth inning to rally host Pittsburgh over Philadelphia after top Pirates prospect Tyler Glasnow was removed with shoulder discomfort. “I think this injury is not as bad so I should be good to go”.

Gonzalezs 429-foot solo blast to center sparked a three-run sixth. He has hit in 14 successive games trying Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon for the longest current streak in the majors. He pitched in two games and allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings during his five-day stint with the Cardinals. He left with leg cramps.

In the seventh, Los Angeles failed to score despite four walks.

He’s got an extra day of rest, though, as he was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the Iowa Cubs, so perhaps he’ll be able to provide the Cardinals with five or six solid innings.

“It just seems like it’s that one mistake pitch”, Roberts said.

Dodgers: Los Angeles called up RHP Ross Stripling from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned LHP Grant Dayton, who threw two scoreless innings in his debut on Friday night.

Adam Liberatore allowed three runs in relief in the seventh inning, snapping his streak of 28 consecutive scoreless appearances, a franchise record. He allowed three runs on six hits.

NOTES: By calling up RHP Mike Mayers from Triple-A Memphis to start Sunday night, St. Louis became the last major league team to use a sixth starting pitcher.
