Deadly heat wave scorches central and eastern US

Meteorologists said a combination of heat and humidity would make it feel like it was more than 100 degrees at times through the Mid-Ohio Valley and West Virginia’s lowlands. A risky heat wave will continue to produce daytime temperatures in the middle to upper 90s, with heat index values topping 100 degrees. The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the triple digits through the weekend in much of the South, Midwest and along the East Coast.

Tuesday is forecasted to be the last unseasonably hot day, Alexander said, with temperatures in the low 90s starting Wednesday. The National Weather Service is warning of an increased fire danger with triple digit temperatures expected for inland areas.

For much of the country, the heat is expected to get worse over the weekend. Regarding this activity, the Storm Prediction Center has highlighted most of southern New England within a zone of “marginal risk” for severe weather, and northwestern CT into central and western MA in a higher-grade “slight risk” for severe weather, particularly strong straight-line wind.

But this year does not approach the July temperatures reached in 2010-2012, when the average daily mark was above 81 degrees.

The culprit: a “heat dome”. If your home doesn’t have air conditioning, go to a cooling center or an air-conditioned public place such as a library or shopping mall.
