Fans of the wildly popular Indian film star Rajinikanth queued overnight for a 4am screening of his new movie yesterday in the southern city of Chennai, where many companies abandoned hope of staff coming to work and closed for the day.

The 65-year-old Tamil superstar Rajinikanth shattered box-office records on Friday with his film Kabali pulling in Rs 50-55 crore on opening day, the biggest for an Indian film this year.

Super Star’s Kabali fever has not only hit India, it has also hit Malaysia.

The collection is awesome not only in India but all over the world. Kabali has created massive records with its opening day figures in all areas of its release. “But the collection of the film is extraordinary”.

“It has earned approximately Rs 100 crore worldwide”, the statement added.

Although, according to an industry insider, the maker’s box-office collection claim seems highly exaggerated. It released in 1000 screens in the north belt. Vijay Singh, chief executive officer at Fox Star Studios, the film’s distributor for markets outside South India, said, “Kabali has lived up to high expectations and opened to packed houses across India”. The movie also collected around Rs 100 crore outside India.

Like before every release of his, the Rajini mania has gripped India and even some countries where he has fans, like the UK, US, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan.

Mingguan Malaysia reported that the film, starring megastar Rajinikanth, is purposely trying to incite racial controversy in Malaysia with numerous film’s scenes shot here.

So this time even Rajinikanth can’t save Kabali, it seems! Trade analyst Trinath told IANS that only a Rajinikanth-starrer could register such a huge opening.
