Chalk one more up for Marvel as Rocket Raccoon and Groot from its surprise breakthrough movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, are headed to the International Space Station. It’s likely that the agency oversold its ability to actually make it to Mars, but since NASA won’t get more funding without public support, you can’t blame it for trying to get us amped for a trip that might not happen anytime soon.
Sanchez says that Doe was a “great choice” for the patch and was “super excited” about it. Doe’s previous designs had Rocket and Groot dominating the logo, adding the space station later, along with subtle touches. The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) has joined hands with Marvel Custom Solutions to have these two characters on the mission patch that will represent the entire payload heading to the US National Laboratory on the ISS.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn took to Twitter to express his delight about the two Marvel heroes’ upcoming space mission. “So both of those characters already embody some of the characteristics associated with what’s happening on the space station”, Patrick O’Neill, CASIS/ISS National Laboratory manager for marketing and communications, said in the video interview.
“It’s exciting for us because this is hopefully the beginning of something that goes beyond just the mission patch”. “There are very few brands in the world who have as large an impact as Marvel, and we are thrilled to partner with them on this project and look forward to Rocket and Groot inspiring a new generation of researchers interested in the space station”.
It is a red, white and blue coloured patch with rocket sitting on Groot’s shoulder, and they both look up to the space station.

They are to be the focus of space and light contest that has the intention to inspire and excite the scientists and engineers of the next generations. It was designed by artist Juan Doe, who has previously designed covers for Marvel.
