Addressing the opening session, Mauritanian President Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz called for the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, which collapsed in 2014. But by Sunday’s summit these plans appeared to have stalled over divisions among Arab states and conflicts of interests.

“The region will remain unstable as long as there is no end for the Israeli occupation”, he said.

Turkey’s Anadolu news agency quoted unnamed sources as saying that a ruler in the emirates, three prime ministers, a parliament speaker and three foreign ministers will lead delegations of their countries.

“The PM might seize the chance to meet some Arab leaders during his participation in the summit. although his agenda does not include any bilateral meetings”, An Nahar newspaper reported.

Saudi Arabia and Arab allies accuse Tehran of arming Yemen’s Shia Houthi group, which overran capital Sanaa and other provinces in 2014.

It is expected that this year’s summit will highlight support of Yemeni president Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi’s constitutional legitimacy as well as Arab nations’ refusal of any military interference in Libya.

Following his nomination, Aboul-Gheit pledged that the Arab League would combat regional challenges, enhance its capacity, and increase collaboration between its members.
