The fire is burning in a sparsely populated area of Santa Clarita, a city of about 180,000 people spread over brushy hills. It’s raging next to State Route 14 in Santa Clarita and the freeway is partially closed.

Huge flames leapt on ridgetops and smoke could be seen miles away in downtown Los Angeles.

Military and civilian firefighters continue to battle a brush fire that has charred 1,345 open acres in the northern reaches of Camp Pendleton. Firefighting aircraft have been assisting firefighters on the ground, including crews from Cal Fire. No buildings were threatened.

Toscano, a Marine veteran, has been a firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service for four years.
