It is the first time the Olympics have been held in South America.
“I am proud to lead such a knowledgeable and experienced team of professionals in Rio and support the largest Team GB athlete delegation at an away Games within modern Olympic era”. Just moments after the IOC decided against a full ban of all Russian athletes, the Australian Olympic team made it known they were not going to be staying in their allotted buildings in the Olympic Village. It was not clear how many athletes were housed in the village on the day. Rampant water pollution in the city and concerns over the Zika virus are two of the key issues that have plagued the lead-up to this year’s Games.
Sporting crowds love having a villain to focus their derision on as much as they love lauding a hero, and Australia’s athletes may have unwittingly become the default Rio Olympics baddies if the local media runs with the baton offered up by their highest-ranking local government official. Tancred said 10 of the 31 buildings were determined to be up to living standards. Chiller cited problems including “blocked toilets, leaking pipes and exposed wiring”. “We’ve got electrical problems”.
“There are lights, beds, air conditioning, but we still lack a few details”, the source said on condition of anonymity.
The system failed a test on Saturday in which taps and toilets were turned on in apartments on several floors, she said.
Chiller listed the same problems, and added more.
The unsavoury conditions have forced the Australian contingent to check in at a nearby hotel instead.
Chiller also said that other teams were also disatisfied with their lodgings. He said that teams “are free to make the adjustments they find necessary”. We want to do the best we can.
“The security presence in and around the village is strong.” – she told Ross. “It looks spectacular. There are just teething issues in some of the service inside the building”.
But there have been issues with plumbing and the state of the accommodation which means a maintenance team have been working for the last seven days to get it ready.

There is also a place of mourning, to be inaugurated with a special ceremony “that will give the opportunity to remember, in particular, those people who have died at the Olympic Games”, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
