Sam Allardyce yet to decide if Wayne Rooney stays as England captain

“It’s been disappointing but not rock bottom”.

He added: “We have got to say it’s not potential any more, it has to be reality now”.

“In my experience, if someone is losing they want to play on and on until they get it back, while everyone else wants to go to bed but can’t because they feel obliged to give the loser a chance”.

Cahill and Moyes enjoy a strong relationship, from the time when they worked together at Everton earlier in their careers. Stand up and be counted, these young players have had a lot of experience.

Allardyce was in confident mood when addressing the media, believing that he is the best man for the job.

“I’m very excited. It was 10 years since I was last interviewed and to sit here is a huge thrill for me”.

However, the former Sunderland boss was confident in his own ability at the helm, saying: “I think I fit the chair”.

“Working with the England elite players will be very exciting for me because they will take on board ideas very quickly”.

Allardyce added: “The game of football is to be enjoyed”. We have to try to get everyone to enjoy themselves.

“I think first and foremost it’s about regaining, perhaps, a bit of confidence they have lost after the Euros”.

“It’s far too early to make any predictions”, said Allardyce.

“I’m going to leave that until I meet all the players and get all the staff together”, Allardyce said. “I look forward to the task in hand, qualifying for the World Cup and moving on from there”. “I’d describe my style as pragmatic. And to make them aware of the opposition, which may change the style of how we play”.

“We were told Jermain was a player who could not play up front on his own, so what does he do?” I don’t expect players at this level to be only able to play in one position or one system. “I think they should be much more capable of being adaptable”.

Allardyce was asked whether he regarded the job as a poisoned chalice, but he dismissed that idea.

He said: “I was good enough then”. You toughen yourself for whatever job you take.
