John Oliver says Donald Trump’s Republican convention was all ‘feelings over facts’
If some of that wording seems sensational, Oliver’s take was equally doom-y, as he dubbed it “the most apocalyptic thing ever to happen to [Cleveland], and bear in mind, their river has repeatedly caught fire”. “He is basically what happens when The Secret gets into the wrong hands“.

To hammer home just how frightening this duality is, Oliver played a clip of Trump from his former reality series The Apprentice, in which he declares, “This is a dictatorship and I’m the dictator”.
“Now, what’s revealing there isn’t his mistaken belief that President Obama is a Muslim”, said Oliver.
Once again, Oliver and his Last Week Tonight team showed off their talent for tackling a large and unwieldy issue – in this case, that larger issue is “Donald Trump: WTF?” – by digging down to its most insidious point.
Oliver joked about the guest speakers at the convention like UFC President Dana White, Rudy Giuliani and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.
For insight, he turned to Antonio Sabato Jr. ” However Oliver does believe he is a visionary”.
The focus on feelings, “reached its apex” with Trump’s speech, which the Last Week Tonight host described as “light on concrete policy but heavy on invoking strong emotion”. The facts are that crime rates have fallen since Obama took office, the flow of undocumented immigrants over our borders has declined and claims for unemployment are down.
Oliver also pointed out that when reporters tried to bring this up, people like Newt Gingrich simply shrugged it off. “You can’t infer anything you like from it”.
Oliver, who is in known opposition of Donald Trump, made the argument that Trump and the RNC spent a lot of time advocating for “feelings over facts”.
“Between those 24 minutes of applause was a symphony of bile and race baiting”, Oliver said.

Then, in an unexpected and amusing turn, Oliver cut to a comical music video, featuring Usher, Sheryl Crowe, Michael Bolton, Cyndi Lauper, and a number of other notable artists protesting the Republican Party by singing, “We’re asking you right now, stop using our songs”, as the song’s chorus.
