Star Trek Beyond soars at box office

While it has a lot of ground here and overseas to cover for its $185 million budgetary costs, Star Trek Beyond still took the weekend with an estimated $59.6 million, and with critical praise it appears to have enough positive buzz to keep afloat for long enough to turn a profit.

Continuing to enjoy the top at the domestic box office, Illuminations/Universal family’s animated title called “The Secret Life of Pets” moves a slight 42 percent to about $29.3 million at No. 2, taking the flick’s 17-day North American Box Office total to $260.7 million. Overall foreign grosses for the Star Trek Beyond franchise stand at about $30 million.

Other new entries in this week’s USA top 10 included Indian gangster film Kabali, which took $4.1m (£3.1m) to land at number eight. Ice Age: Collision Course landed a $21 million debut, which is about $20 million under the previous and already low debut. The horror film pulled in an estimated $21.6 million and is neck and neck with “Ghostbusters”, for a third place weekend toll, once the final numbers are released.
