Minnesota delegate and Sanders supporter Gabe Aderhold said a roomful of the senator’s supporters booed loudly when Sanders said during a Monday morning meeting that he would back Clinton.
When on Thursday, Clinton, 68, delivers her acceptance speech, she would make history and if she is elected in the November general elections, she would be the first woman president of the United States. Bernie Sanders to heed the former presidential candidate’s call and work against the “unfathomable” prospect of a Republican Donald Trump presidency.
The DNC issued an apology to Sanders supporters just as the convention was starting.
“If they marched yesterday in that heat, they will be here today”, she said.
Sanders, who finally endorsed Clinton over a month after the last primary, told a campaign-like gathering in Philadelphia that Democrats had to defeat GOP nominee Donald Trump – which drew cheers. “Bernie is clearly supporting Hillary Clinton”.
The mood of the Sanders supporters was soured by the recent leak of embarrassing emails from the Democratic National Committee that led Wasserman Schultz to announce she will step down after this week’s convention.
But Welder, who organized volunteers for Sanders in Missouri and previously worked on the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John Kerry, said he isn’t yet ready to support Clinton.
Sanders’ supporters were still reeling from emails published by WikiLeaks earlier this week that appear to show Democratic officials had favored Clinton over Sanders during the primaries.
Police officers were posted at street corners in downtown Philadelphia as the first protesters hit the city’s sweltering streets Sunday ahead of the Democratic National Convention.
“Tim is a very, very smart guy”, Sanders said on NBC’s “Meet the Press“.
Delegates chanted “Shame!” and held up laser-printed signs that simply read “E-mails”.
“And to the Bernie Sanders delegates, we want you, we need you, and we want you to be part of us”, Groen said. “But yeah. I think everyone is coming to that”.
