Sgt. Craig Hutchinson, a 32-year veteran, was responding to burglars stealing equipment from a shed in a backyard when the confrontation occurred, Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton told reporters.

Hamilton confirms that Hutchinson was shot before 1:30 a.m. Monday morning in what appears to be an alteraction that took place in the sergeant’s backyard.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted “Please keep our Travis County Sheriff’s family in your thoughts and prayers”. “I heard that there’s a lot of burglaries going on in this community, and I think this was just one of the burglaries”. He was my field training officer, so this is near and dear to me, this guy was a big teddy bear, and everybody loved him”, he said, “He was a gentle bear and he taught me everything I know. Hamilton said a tip line has been established for anyone with information at 512-671-2767.

No arrests have been made but authorities are seeking multiple suspects, Hamilton said in a briefing.
