‘Star Trek Beyond’ Debuts Strong, ‘Ice Age 5’ Disappoints
The film, celebrating the 50 anniversary of Star Trek, brought in $59.6 million, which is nearly exactly what everyone seemed to think the movie would make in its opening weekend.

Unfortunately, Star Trek Beyond is off to a less-than-stellar start outside the U.S. The film managed to score a #1 debut in only 16 out of the 37 territories when it opened over the weekend for a $30 million global total. The franchise released Star Trek in 2009, Star Trek into Darkness in 2013, and Star Trek Beyond in 2015.
“Beyond” grossed more than $59 million at the domestic box office, while the animated hit “The Secret Life of Pets” came in second, bringing in more than $29 million.
With an estimated $21 million opening, the opposite is true for $105 million-costing Ice Age: Collision Course.
It’s the franchise’s thirteenth “Star Trek” film and is faring well with movie-goers and critics, earning an 84% thumbs up on Rotten Tomatoes. Tying in third place with an estimated $21.6 million in sales apiece were “Ghostbusters” (Sony), for a two-week domestic total of nearly $87 million, and “Lights Out”, which notably cost only $5 million to make. The Enterprise model U.S.S Enterprise was launched in 2151 as NX- 01 and the Star Trek (TOS) Enterprise was launched in 2245 as NCC-1701. This was the weakest opening of the series and I see this film struggling to do well at the box office although the numbers were surprising considering the recent success of animated films this year.
During the 2016 San Diego Comic Con, CBS revealed a new teaser for “Star Trek: Discovery”.

CBS All Access offers next-day streaming for new episodes of many popular shows and a library of over 7,500 on-demand episodes, including content from current programs like “Limitless” and “Elementary, ‘ and classic series like ‘Star Trek” and ‘Cheers.’ Likewise, select customers can watch live local CBS broadcasts. However, Beyond will face tough competition for male audiences in the coming weeks from Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad. Are you looking forward to the series’ premiere in January?
