That session was scheduled for 7 p.m., but it was 8:45 before the evening headliner, 2014 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, started hitting balls against qualifier Magda Linette of Poland. She was No. 8 in the WTA Tour rankings after losing to Kvitova in the 2014 Wimbledon final, but she lost to American qualifier Shelby Rogers, who was No. 113, in the first round. The 26-year-old broke Linette four times – twice in each set – and ended the match with three aces.

The thirteenth-seeded Stosur struggled in the first set but manage to win the set while in the second set she found her groves and easily taken the match.

“It was hard, but we had a lot of rain in Europe and I was used to it”, said Strycova, who used the down time to “eat, chill and get a little sleep”.

Stosur avoided the upset, beating 67th-ranked Heather Watson in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.

“I’m not superstitious but I think that the match two years ago was a bit of a nightmare and I wanted to change things up”, Bouchard said.

Canadian Francoise Abanda saw her first-round match postponed because of the weather. “I held on to win that game and then I played a good game to break her”.

The Ukrainian 17th seed was a 6-2 6-4 victor over American qualifier Jennifer Brady.

Also on Tuesday, we’ll see play from No, 3 seed Garbine Muguruza (v Broady), No. 10 Madison Keys, recent Stanford victor Johanna Konta and Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard who meets Lucie Safarova in a battle of former Top 10ers and Grand Slam finalists. Italian qualifier, World No.77 Camila Giorgi caused an upset, as she defeated World No.23 Sloane Stephens of United States of America 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4).

“We don’t play until Wednesday so she has time to adjust but I hope she’s exhausted”, said Strycova. Abanda will face qualifier Saisai Zheng of China on Tuesday. The Czech native will face sixth seed Venus Williams in the second round.

Meanwhile Gavrilova edged German Annika Beck in straight sets, 6-4 6-3 on a wet opening day. Her next opponent is fifth-seed Simona Halep.
