The hills north of Los Angeles continue to burn and spew thick black smoke from the wildfire that destroyed 18 homes and prompted thousands of people to evacuate.

Residents living in the path of the blaze need to heed mandatory evacuation orders for their own safety as well as that of the police and firefighters working to protect them, said Los Angeles County fire Chief Daryl Osby.

Officials announced all residents in evacuated areas would be allowed to return home at 7 p.m., with the exception of those located on Placerita Canyon Road from Running Horse Lane to Pacy Street, and Little Tujunga Canyon Road from the Wildlife Way Station to Sand Canyon Road & Placerita Canyon Road.

Firefighters have been dumping flame retardant around the edge of the blaze to stop it from spreading, but high winds and soaring temperatures have enabled the fire to jump canyons and get ahead of fire lines.

Since Sunday the blaze engulfed an additional 11,000 acres, according to the latest figures from fire managers. Much of the Los Angeles basin was dusted with a thin layer of fine white ash from the fire over the weekend.

The areas will only be open to residents, who will need to provide identification, officials said.

There was no evidence the death was crime-related, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday as the investigation continued.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory, noting that people in affected areas are susceptible to direct smoke impact and unhealthy air quality.
