After turmoil, Bernie Sanders, Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Warren thrill Democratic convention

The Democratic National Convention, where Clinton and Kaine will be nominated, begins Monday in Philadelphia. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., holds up a sign call calling for Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee to be fired, Sunday, July 24, 2016, in Philadelphia.

“The party now needs new leadership that will open the doors of the party and welcome in working people and young people”, Sanders said.

The first lady was among a high-wattage line-up of speakers taking the stage, all but wiping away earlier tumult that had exposed deep tensions between Clinton supporters and those loyal to her primary opponent Bernie Sanders.

“I’m not shocked, but I’m disappointed”, Sanders said of the hacked emails, one of which questioned whether his religious beliefs could be used against him, on ABC’s “This Week”. They had been in Miami at midday for his first appearance with Clinton since joining her campaign. Ms. Clinton seems far shrewder than to lean so heavily into the stereotype of a liberal Democrat.

Trump appeared to relish the Democratic chaos on Sunday, writing on Twitter: “The Dems Convention is cracking up”.

Another independent election seer, Charlie Cook, also shows Clinton at the moment with enough electoral votes to claim the presidency, 304-190, with states with 44 electoral votes too close to call. Kaine’s use of Spanish and English during the rally was also no mistake, as there are many Latinovoters in Florida that will be harmed by Trump’s immigration policies.

Arguably, Clinton’s choice betrays her confidence that a win in November is a given. “No plans to make anything great for anyone except rich guys like Donald Trump”.

Kaine told Clinton, according to aides: “This is going to be the beginning of a attractive relationship and we’re going to have a lot of fun out there”.

The self-inflicted wounds could hamper the Clinton campaign’s effort to portray the party’s convention in a different light from the just-concluded Republican gathering in Cleveland.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who shares numerous progressive ideals championed by Sanders during his presidential campaign. Tim Kaine (R-VA) as her running mate to help her appeal to blue-collar men, but her selection only reinforces her biggest weaknesses with voters.

“I like to fight for right”, he said. “And I’ll move to Canada”.

Carol A.O. Wolf, a longtime friend of the Kaines, said the close-knit neighborhood felt it important to turn out and show their support for their neighbor.

“Sen. Sanders was gracious, and he’s willing to do the right thing”, said Kenneth Bruder, 21, a delegate from Merritt Island in Brevard County who will be attending his first national convention.

Sanders endorsed Clinton two weeks ago after pressing for the party platform to include a $15-an-hour minimum wage, debt-free college and an expansion of access to health care.

The convention is among the campaign’s last chances to recast the personal narrative about Clinton, especially with her favorability ratings dipping further after the Federal Bureau of Investigation director’s criticism of her use of a private email server as secretary of State.

How the emails were stolen hasn’t been confirmed.

“When Donald Trump says he has your back, you better watch out”, he said. That made the billionaire real estate tycoon and one-time television reality show host the first major USA party presidential nominee in more than six decades to claim a major party’s nomination without previously having been elected to any public office.
