‘Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation’ tops the North American box office
In the first few minutes of the fifth Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise defies death and belief by hanging onto an airborne Airbus A400 – wearing a suit, no less. Saturday’s total hit $19.7-million.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” is much like its predecessors; it’s a spy flick with mayhem, elaborate action sequences and fairly high body count. Those numbers put Ghost Protocol ($29 million) and Mission: Impossible III ($47 million) in the shade.
“Rogue Nation” also opened in about 40 percent of worldwide markets with $65-million, led by South Korea’s $17-million.
“They have delivered a film that has such energy and excitement”, said Rob Moore, Pararmount’s vice chair.
The film is in the super-cable hands of talented director Christopher McQuarrie (Usual Suspects, Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher, Valkyrie), who may very well solidify the resurrection of Tom Cruise’s career with Rogue Nation. It had been on track for an opening weekend of USD40 million, according to recent studio estimates. In the first 17 days since it was released, “Ant-Man” has made about 132 million dollars in the U.S. and Canada.
Still, the R-rated Vacation is a low-risk entry for New Line, given its USD31 million budget. Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann and Chris Hemsworth star. About 53 percent of the audience was female, and 52 percent younger than 35. Universal’s fourth weekend of “Minions” followed with US$12.2 million at 3,575 locations to lift its 24-day total to US$287.3 million.
