Colon sharp, Mets beat Cards 3-1 for doubleheader split

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson reiterated that the team likely won’t be major players at the trade deadline, when he spoke to the media before Monday’s game against the Cardinals.

The Mets’ Bartolo Colon (8-5) and St. Louis’ Jaime Garcia (7-6), who had been scheduled to pitch Tuesday, will start the second game.

NOTES: The Cardinals experienced mechanical difficulties with their flight out of St. Louis. They arrived at their NY hotel around 8:30 a.m. Monday after plane trouble, and the rainout gave them some much-needed rest. The Mets are rolling with the same lineup they were planning to use before Monday’s game was rained out.

The Mets will play a single-admission double-header on Tuesday at 4:10 p.m., although only Tuesday’s game tickets are valid for admission.

“We have a lot of guys with 20-plus potential”, Matheny said. “I’m glad we’re done with him”. “So it was impressive”. Less than an hour after Monday’s game was called off, the rain stopped and a rainbow appeared over the ballpark.

The rainout came one year after one of the most eventful weeks in Mets history. St. Louis almost took a 4-2 lead on Yadier Molina’s double in the fifth, but Matt Adams was thrown out at the plate.

“I learned a lot previous year, I really did”.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve got to say it: This is crunch time”, Terry Collins said. Deals at the deadline don’t always work out that well. From the pictures I saw, it looked bad the entire evening in Queens so they did the smart thing and didn’t even try to play.

“I’m not gonna get into coaching decisions”, Collins said. “You don’t have to like it, you have to accept it”.

Alderson said splashier acquisitions were unrealistic because of high prices. He also said that not trading for a starting pitcher is based upon right-hander Zach Wheeler coming back at some point. The 43-year-old Dominican surrendered a pair of home runs and notched just one strikeout in the most recent setback.

The Cards are 5-2 in their last seven overall, 12-4 in their last 16 road games, and 5-1 in Garcia’s last six road starts while the Mets are 24-7 in their last 31 against the NL Central, 4-0 in Colon’s last four home starts, and 7-2 in his last nine overall.

Syndergaard, pitching with an extra day’s rest because of the rainout, needed 23 pitches to get through a scoreless first.
