Bernie Sanders Protesters Storm the Press Tent at Democratic Convention

Sun Prairie delegate Christine McDonough said Tuesday morning she was still hoping there was a chance superdelegates would switch their votes during the roll call and elect Sanders as the nominee Tuesday, admitting that was unlikely. Nguyen says she doesn’t think it was necessarily directed at the candidate.

Although the outcome was a foregone conclusion, the state-by-state vote saw rowdy displays on the convention floor. “Bernie!” continued inside the convention hall throughout the evening, Sanders protesters outside tried to breach security barriers, leading to 54 people being briefly detained and fined US$50 each.

But Sanders has asked his supporters to support Clinton after she gets the nomination, so “I feel we should honor that”, Shcherbenko later said.

Civil rights icon John Lewis, a congressman from Georgia, seconded the nomination.

“We are here to vote for Bernie, we have not voted yet and it seems like the convention has moved on without us”, he said.

Mrs Clinton’s supporters say her Washington credentials show she has the experience needed to be president during a turbulent time for United States domestic and foreign policy issues.

“Having Michelle Obama and Bernie himself come out in support of Hillary that should go a long way to help unify the party”, said Theresa Mah, a Chicago Democrat running unopposed for the Illinois House in November.

Sanders continues to try to quell dissent from Sanders’ supporters over backing Clinton.

Sanders emailed supporters Monday, asking them not to be disruptive, to be respectful in the arena, but clearly some were unswayed.

“This election is about the thousands of young people I have met who have left college deeply in debt, and the many others who can not afford to go to college”, Sanders said.

Joel Bradshaw, a 39-year-old lifelong Democrat, said he could not support Trump because of his rhetoric. On several occasions over the past several days he declared: “I’m proud to stand with her”. “Donald Trump does not”, Sanders said. But they aren’t so sure about his latest message: Get behind Hillary Clinton.

The Republican nominee has attempted to sway Sanders supporters over to his camp, but polling data shows that only a small fraction of his backers are willing to cast ballots for Trump.
