Round Rock police are telling people who live in a Southeast neighborhood to stay inside their homes.
Deputy was murdered in his own yard after coming home from work to find multiple suspects lurking in his backyard.
The Texas Department of Public Safety told TV station KXAN (http://bit.ly/2a8ldE9 ) that the officer was shot in his home.
According to police, Sargent Craig Hutchinson radioed his fellow police to let them know someone fishy was prowling around his house.
The incident occurred at around 1:22 a.m.in the Austin suburb of Round Rock.
He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Items were removed from Hutchinson’s shed, authorities said. Police say they have received 50 tips through their tip line but they still need anyone with information to come forward.
Tensions remain high following the fatal shooting earlier this month of five police officers in Dallas and the ambush and killing of three law enforcement officers in Louisiana.
“There’s no suggestion that this was an ambush”, Hamilton said.
A SWAT team, DPS Troopers, Pflugerville police and an Air One helicopter are assisting with the search for the suspects. Investigators established a hotline for anyone with information. He has been in the service for 32 years and was planning on retiring in September.
“He was a gentle bear and he taught me everything I know and I loved that guy to death”, said Hamilton.
