Weekend Box Office: ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Warps To Top Spot

It is about $15 million below the original “Star Trek” debut in 2009 and $10 million less than what “Star Trek Into Darkness” premiered with in 2013.

Now, the newest “Star Trek” film will need to navigate deftly toward such multinational appeal, especially needing to engage audiences in such large markets as Asia and Latin America.

With the two previous films in the Kelvin timeline of Star Trek films breaking the $70 million mark, Star Trek Beyond didn’t manage that this time around though it won the weekend overall.

Considering how the summer of 2016 has been somewhat of a franchise killer, Star Trek Beyond made an impressive start at the US box office over its opening weekend, as it hauled in $59 million.

The third film in the reboot franchise earned $59.6 million, far more than any other film over the weekend.

New Line and Warner Bros.’ supernatural horror film Lights Out, which cost under $5-M to make, tied with Ghostbusters for # 3 with a better-than-expected $21.6-M from 2,818 theaters.

“Ghostbusters” – a remake of the 1984 supernatural comedy that replaces the male leads with women – dropped to less than half of its opening weekend box office, taking in just $21 million.

“Star Trek Beyond” is the third film in the rebooted franchise that kicked off with J.J. Abrams” “Star Trek.’ This latest film opened mn behind that 2009 release, but experts say the returns are still promising for Paramount. Star Trek’s future is dependent on its performance overseas, though, which is why it’s worrying that its numbers have been a little underwhelming. The makers of the film had presented the film on the big screens in a good and proper way and it is one of the reason that people are attracting towards the film in a large number. I guess we’ll see if this movie has legs in the weeks to come, but I’m not that optimistic, since the movie will be facing stiff competition from Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad.

Rounding out the top five was Ice Age: Collision Course which landed with a bit of a thud in the USA with $21M off of its $105M budget. Worldwide, the film has earned a staggering $323.7 million.
