Tigers Spoil Pomeranz’s Second Red Sox Start In 4-2 Win

The Tigers lost a pair of one-run contests Sunday to the White Sox in Chicago – 4-3 in the completion of a suspended game from Saturday, then 5-4 in the regularly scheduled contest.
The Red Sox have Drew Pomeranz on the mound to face Justin Verlander of the Tigers. It just wasn’t enough for him to earn his first victory in a Boston uniform.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Steven Wright delivers during the first inning of a baseball game against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park, Tuesday, July 26, 2016, in Boston.
Fantasy Impact: Pomeranz looked much better in his second start with the Red Sox who recently acquired him from the Padres. The opposing teams are just getting 6.9 hits and.7 home runs per nine innings of pitching.
“They nicked him for two runs each of the first two innings, then I thought he got the touch and feel for it and started to have his typical action to the pitch”, manager John Farrell said.
“I don’t think about that too much”, Pomeranz said. “I was in a lot better counts all night”.
But other than that, the Red Sox failed to really get anything going off the 33-year-old.
The Red Sox embark on a ten-game West Coast road trip starting Thursday in Anaheim before heading to Seattle for four games and concluding with a three-game interleague series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Tigers tacked on two more to take a 4-1 lead into the eighth but after Verlander was taken out of the game, the Sox wasted a golden opportunity when they loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth.
GAME NOTES -After a gritty win Monday night at Fenway, the Tigers enter tonight’s game 5.5 games behind Cleveland in the American League Central. And Brad Ziegler has been brilliant since joining the club, allowing just one hit and no runs in six innings pitched.
Wright has made one career start against the Tigers, surrendering four runs on five hits in a 4 1/3-inning loss last July 25. He took a hard-luck loss June 2, 2015, in Boston, holding the Red Sox to one run on five hits in a 1-0 defeat. He made his lone appearance against Detroit last season, allowing just one run and three hits over seven innings. The Tigers struck again in the eighth, using a Victor Martinez single to score Jose Iglesias.
The Rockies loaded the bases with one out in the third on three singles off Tillman. A single by Sandy Leon pulled the Red Sox within 4-2, but Wilson settled down to get an out and Rodriguez came on to help end the rally. In the second, Travis Shaw lined a double into the right-field corner, scoring Jackie Bradley Jr.
It was the first career homer in Fenway for Iglesias, who started his career in Boston before being traded to Detroit in 2013.
“It was nice to get back in that five-day routine and get on a schedule somewhere and kind fall back into what I’ve been doing all year”, Pomeranz said. “They hit some pretty good pitches”, Wright said.
This isn’t to say Price can’t turn things around and potentially be the Red Sox’ Game 1 playoff starter, but as of now he certainly isn’t.

Tigers: RHP Michael Fulmer (9-2, 2.41 ERA) makes his 16th start of the year in Wednesday’s series finale. Wright defeated Minnesota 13-2 last time out with an earned run allowed in eight frames. Veteran Mike Pelfrey shoots for back to back wins after downing the White Sox 2-1 last time out.
