Bernie Sanders gets emotional as brother Larry Sanders casts vote at DNC

“We proudly cast our 25 votes, 10 for the senator Bernie Sanders, who inspired us all, and 15 for the 45th president of the United States and the first one who will be called Madame President, Hillary Rodham Clinton”, Tornberg said.

On Tuesday evening, delegates to the Democratic National Convention will hold a roll-call vote for president where Clinton is expected to receive the party’s nomination.

Barbara Mikulski, the first woman elected to the Senate from Maryland and a longtime friend of the Clintons, said as she placed Clinton’s name in nomination.

Former White House hopeful Bernie Sanders has told a lively Democratic convention that his rival Hillary Clinton must win the USA presidential election in November. Moments after Mrs Clinton claimed the nomination, a group of Sanders supporters left the convention and headed to a media tent to protest what they said was their being shut out of the party.

The roll call this year, when each state announces its delegate totals from the primary season, will affirm a nomination Clinton locked up weeks ago.

Even after Sanders endorsed the presumptive nominee in a joint rally earlier this month, some of his most vocal supporters at the Democratic National Convention continued to resist Clinton’s candidacy, booing her name on the floor Monday afternoon and successfully calling for the ouster of Democratic National Committee head Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Clinton had already met the necessary delegate vote count by the time Vermont reported its delegate count, but the declaration by Sanders was an effort to convince his supporters to back Clinton. The line-up of speakers will talk about her life-long fights to make a difference.

The proceedings began with nominating speeches for Sanders and Clinton.

“We will shatter that glass ceiling again”, Lewis said, comparing Clinton’s barrier-breaking candidacy to President Barack Obama’s historic election victories.

Hillary Clinton becomes the first female nominee by a major party for President of the United States. The experience of becoming a grandmother, in particular, seems to have softened Clinton as a candidate, helping her become more comfortable grounding her candidacy on her personal background and family story.

Sanders made an appearance at a meeting of the NY delegation Tuesday, which is right now split between its support of the Vermont senator and Clinton.

But Clinton and the others – including mothers who have lost children to gun violence or in clashes with police – will also have the unstated mission of mending fences with Sanders’ army of vocal young activists. “Hillary did not pack up and go home”, she said.

First lady Michelle Obama was a star of the opening night, making an impassioned case for Mrs Clinton as the only candidate in the presidential race worthy of being a role model for the nation’s children.
