With the cutting attack usually expected of a VP choice, Franken added: “And Trump University is about more than just bilking people”.

The evening opened quietly enough, with Demi Lovato taking the stage as the DNC’s first musical performer.

Soon after she went in on the Bernie or Bust movement, people swarmed to social media to express their support as well as frustration for Silverman’s speech. But Silverman told the crowd in Philadelphia – and a national television audience – that she plans to vote for Clinton.

Silverman, who was a frequent surrogate for Sanders’ campaign on the trail, said she would “proudly” and “with gusto” vote for Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee.

After finishing her prepared remarks, Silverman was urged to “stretch”, as the next act – a performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Paul Simon – was not yet ready to begin.

“Bernie’s already succeeded in so many ways”, she said.

Actress Eva Longoria of “Desperate Housewives” was also on the slate. As a ninth-generation American from South Texas, she said, “My family never crossed a border – the border crossed us. He proved that Citizens United is, in fact, not a necessary evil”.

In the end, though, Franken offered Clinton a honest endorsement, saying Americans should cast their vote for a person who has “spent her entire life working to get important things done for the American people” instead of “someone who’s never done anything for anyone other than himself”.

Boyz II Men also performed, while Grammy victor Alicia Keys, who founded a social justice organization called We Are Here, appeared on a panel on criminal justice reform and civil rights, hosted by the news site Politico. “I support Bernie Sanders and the movement behind him …”
