Olympics: 22 of 28 Russian rowers banned from Rio Games

Here we collate the current status, where possible, of each Olympic sport in turn – with the exception of football and rugby sevens, in which no Russian athlete had been scheduled to take part. The decision, the Stepanovs claim, is based on incorrect information, including the IOC’s framing of Stepanova’s decision to become a whistleblower as a too-little-too-late desperation play made after the Russian team had cast her aside. But PSP-Farman is also the name of a Serbian-Russian construction group which still operates and which says on its website it has won contracts from, among other clients, Russia’s central bank, Russian state-owned gas exporter Gazprom, and state broadcaster Russia Today.

Hagan, from Perth, said they tried to stay calm until before the call came but now the scramble was on to prepare for Rio.

Matthieu Reeb, CAS secretary general, told AFP in an email it had yet to receive the appeal.

The IAAF has banned all Russian track and field athletes from Rio, with the exception of those who can prove they have been rigorously tested outside Russia: now, only long-jumper Darya Klishina meets the criteria.

“The surprise result of the Sochi investigation was the revelation of the extent of State oversight and directed control of the Moscow laboratory in processing, and covering up urine samples of Russian athletes from virtually all sports before and after the Sochi Games”, Mr. McLaren wrote in the report.

Lists of Russian athletes approved by global federations must still be approved by CAS arbiters who can reject athletes not tested outside Russia. They were listed as Tuiana Dashidorzhieva, Ksenia Perova and Inna Stepanova.

Russian archers have been targeted for additional testing, both in and out of competition, since the report was released, the federation said.

For one, a blanket ban on Russian athletes would likely have been derailed by numerous legal hurdles.

With the addition of a women’s eight rowing crew to this Team will grow to 419 athletes – 212 women and 207 men.

The UIPM, which approved Russia’s other three entries, says it “is fully committed in the fight against doping”. In one sense it was disappointing that the IOC deferred the decision to the International Sport Federations instead of making that decision from its self-declared position as the moral authority of sport.

The entire Russian crew have been ruled ineligible.

The International Judo Federation, whose honorary president is Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, said it has already tested 84 percent of the 389 athletes from 136 countries who are qualified to compete in Rio.

BOXING – The International Boxing Association is yet to announce a decision on 11 Russian boxers.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said it “has taken note” of the IOC ruling and “shall fully adhere to it”.

There were 17 Russian athletes set to compete at Rio.
