´Star Trek Beyond´ tops box office, but not boldly
Still, this film will need support from more than just Trekkies and sci-fi fans to turn a profit.

But despite its strong performance in the United States over the weekend, it took $15m (£11.4m) less than 2009’s Star Trek – the first film in the current series.
Star Trek Beyond had created a buzz among the audience since the trailer of the film was released on the various social media platforms and on YouTube and really loved by the audience. 2009’s Star Trek opened with $75.2 million, and Star Trek Into Darkness opened with $70.1 million in 2013. “Star Trek Beyond” opened in line with industry expectations. If Beyond doesn’t at least break even, expect there to be some budgetary changes once Star Trek 4, which was announced this past week, goes into production.
Star Trek may be in for some stiff competition with big name movies opening on Friday.
In fifth place was “Ice Age: Collision Course” with a $21 million take in its debut. Entertainment Weekly says that this is the first time one of the “Ice Age” films has grossed less than $41 million during opening weekend. To make matters worse, this is officially the worst opening for an animated studio tentpole in a decade. That number is 14% less than what its predecessor managed in the same handful of territories, meaning that Beyond could feasibly fall short of the $238.6 million foreign gross of Into Darkness. Considering that the second film (‘The Meltdown”) had the series’ highest opening ($68 million) and each of the other three debuts in the $40 million range, it comes as a massive blow that “Collision Course’ opened in the #5 spot to just $21 million.
“Despite a brand new animated kids” movie opening this weekend, ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ landed in second place its third week. The film’s global total now stands at $260.5 million.
Lights Out has gotten some good words from critics, but despite tying Ghostbusters this week with an estimated $21.6 million, the horror flick only cost $4.9 million to make, enjoying profound success on its small budget.
Year-to-date box office is up 2.3%, according to comScore.
