The Yankees built a five-run lead thanks in part to a two-run triple by Aaron Hicks by the time Evan Gattis homered to start Houston’s seventh and cut it to 6-2.

Sabathia (6-8) lasted 6.2 innings, yielding two runs on four hits and two walks.

Girardi wanted to stay away from using Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller but was forced to, after Anthony Swarzak yielded Gonzalez’s second homer, making it 6-3 in the eighth. 500 for the first time this season. “I get that. I don’t want a player who’s content not being in there”.

Bregman’s whole family was in attendance to watch him play his first game in the big leagues, and the third baseman came this close to having one of the more memorable debuts in recent memory. Sabathia then got two outs before allowing a single to Carlos Gomez.

Like Michael Pineda on Monday, Sabathia was victimized by a first-inning home run as Marwin Gonzalez’s one-out solo shot gave the Astros an early lead.

Yankees starters continue to come up big since the All-Star break as Sabathia pushed aside a six-start skid in which he allowed four earned runs or more in each appearance. After hitting a career-high 25 home runs last season, he’s sitting at.260/.357/.459 in his ninth big-league campaign.

At the beginning of last night’s Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, I started off by talking about the news that broke last night regarding the New York Yankees (50-48) trading Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs for a package that included top shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres.

The Yankees are playing their best ball of the season and all of a sudden find themselves in the middle of a wild card race.

Sabathia shook off the first-inning homer, retiring eight of the next 10 Astros without allowing a hit. “I played first base, pitched some”, he said.

Springer’s fifth leadoff home run of the year was the 11th for the Astros this season, surpassing the previous club record of 10 set in 2001. Bregman, who was the second pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, will play third base tonight.

“He was exceptional on defense at a position he hadn’t played too many innings at”, Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.

“I didn’t want to flip over the wall, ” said Headley, explaining why he dove headfirst for the ball. “Which now being out here I’m really sad about that, but basketball turned out OK”.
