Victim of California fire refused to evacuate
The fire has destroyed 18 homes since it started and authorities over the weekend discovered the burned body of a man in a auto. Jerry Brown and other officials are in Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention. “With only 25 percent containment, we still have 75 percent of the 37,000-plus acre fire that is unsecured”. Officials said that a man’s body was found in a burnt vehicle but are unsure whether the cause of death was from the fire or something else.

Residents have reported smoke-filled air and falling ash in many parts of the greater Los Angeles area as a result of the fires.
The National Weather Service forecast of near-triple-digit temperatures and 20 mph wind gusts that could make attempts hard to further extinguish the so-called Sand Fire, a wildfire that erupted 40 miles north of Los Angeles that has destroyed 18 homes and claimed one life. Some evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes last night, fire officials announced, while residents of areas still deemed too risky were not.
The fire also charred areas of the Sable Ranch, which was a popular shooting location for film and television shows.
Bresnick was visiting a friend when evacuation orders went out to residents, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. But by Monday night, a majority of those residents were allowed to return home.
Area resident Lois Wash, 87, said she and her daughter and her dog evacuated, but her husband refused.
Because people have tried for decades to suppress all wildfires, even harmless ones, Staudt said, unsafe levels of combustible materials have built up in forests.
Some neighborhoods in Santa Clarita, population about 200,000, remained off limits Tuesday because of the fire. Crews working through the night took advantage of cooler temperatures and lighter winds after a day when the fire grew only slightly to about 55 square miles (142.26 sq. kilometers).
Most of the roughly 20,000 evacuees forced out by the blaze were cleared to go home Monday, but firefighters still have a huge job ahead. The fire, which has chewed through about 55 square miles of tinder-dry brush, is only partially contained.
“That fire came through like a freight train”, John Tripp, incident commander with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, told the station. The man’s neighbor told KTLA that the victim’s home was among the structures that had burned down.
The wildfire made its relentless march down the central coast, destroying at least 20 homes.
