Michelle Obama, a lawyer who has advocated for military families and working women during her seven-and-a-half years as first lady, has earned a reputation for inspirational speeches.

Martha McKenna, a Clinton delegate from Maryland, said the night felt like a celebration for Sanders’ campaign as well as Mrs Clinton’s.

Clinton can however draw on political lessons learned after her long career in the glare of the public spotlight.

“B$3 ecause of Hillary Clinton”, Michelle said, her voice cracking, “my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States”.

“Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great, that somehow we need to make it great again, because this right now is the greatest country on earth”, she said.

First lady Michelle Obama gives two thumbs up to the crowd after delivering remarks on the first day of the Democratic National Convention at the Wells Fargo Center, July 25, 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The nominating formalities on Tuesday night mark moment of vindication for Clinton who emerged from the wreckage of her unsuccessful 2008 bid – in which she started out as highly favored – to serve as secretary of state in Obama’s “Team of Rivals” cabinet.

“When you have the nuclear codes at your fingerprints … you can’t have a thin skin or a tendency to lash out”, but must be measured and well informed, Obama said.

She talked about her daughters, and of the challenges she and the president- and all other parents- face in providing them with good examples of adults they should aspire to be like.

Never predictable or boring when it comes to clothes, her choice was in line with the modern and cool approach she has taken for the last eight years.

The first lady appealed to all that is wholesome and aspirational, in anyone, regardless of political affiliation.
