The city of St. Anthony and organizers of its annual VillageFest have announced they are canceling this year’s parade in the wake of the police shooting of Philando Castile. “Racially profiled, pulled over for a broken taillight, shot multiple times next to his fiancée and her 4-year-old daughter”.
Investigators search a auto after a police-involved shooting in Falcon Heights, Minn., July 6.
Castile’s mother, Valerie Castile, asked that no pictures or video be taken during the funeral. Castile was killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in suburban St. Paul last week.
The 90-minute service included reflections from family and faith leaders. On the sidewalk leading to the front door a message in chalk read, “RIP Philando”. Among those who attended the funeral, Gov. Mark Dayton, Rep. Keith Ellison and Mayor Chris Coleman were present. Friends hugged and wept as they looked at Castile, who was dressed all in white, his dreadlocks pulled back from his face.
Days earlier Kelly said Yanez was reacting to the display of the gun when he opened fire July 8.
He also said he is thankful for police and their service, but said people need to find a way to come together.
“We can’t continue to survive if things don’t change”, Daniels said. “It just seems like this might be the last straw for everybody”. Father John Ubel, the rector, who is a Pope Francis-appointed missionary of mercy, presided over the ecumenical service, which followed an adapted form of the Catholic funeral rite outside of the Mass.
Mourners wait enter the Cathedral of St. Paul to pay their respects to Philando Castile on Thursday, July 14, 2016. The casket was returned to the carriage for its trip to a private burial.
He also extended a hand to law enforcement, saying: “We must learn to respect the law and thank them for their services”. We will provide updates on the case as they are made available.
After getting his firearm, Castile took a gun safety class where he learned about the best ways to comply and act when interacting with the police.
A cloudy sky loomed over this morning’s funeral procession that led up to the service at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, other public servants and clergy from a variety of denominations attended the funeral, as did several priests, seminarians and Little Sisters of the Poor. They went to Total Defense in Ramsey, where owner Dan Wellman says they teach students to hand over their permits with their driver’s licenses.
“In a traffic stop you are always in a heightened state of awareness – or should be – and [the presence of] a firearm exacerbates that”.
