The St. Louis County Police confirmed one of its officers was involved in a shooting, but did not say if the victim was shot by police or if that was a separate incident.

A day of peaceful rallies in Ferguson, Missouri, gave way to pandemonium on Sunday as gunfire erupted during a standoff between police in riot gear and protesters near where an unarmed black teenager was shot dead by a white officer one year ago.

An AFP journalist heard about two dozen shots ring out and saw one bloodied protester lying on the ground.

It’s also not known if anyone else was injured.

The protesters, locking arms and edging closer to the police cordon, began throwing water bottles and shouting, “We are ready for war!”

Earlier Sunday demonstrators took to the streets, a year after the police shooting of a black teen sparked violent unrest and renewed a national conversation about America’s troubled race relations. Several hundred protesters had gathered to mark the anniversary of Brown’s death and some blocked traffic.

Brown’s death started the #BlackLivesMatter movement and led to protests and a push for change after several similar incidents later in 2014 and in 2015.

Brown’s shooting, and a grand jury’s subsequent decision to spare police officer Darren Wilson from criminal charges in the killing, spawned a prolonged wave of demonstrations in Ferguson that boiled over into rioting and arson at times and spawned sympathy rallies across the country.

The shootings happened near the intersection of West Florissant Avenue and Ferguson Avenue as tensions between protesters and police escalated.

Hazel Bland, 51, who lives in the Canfield Green apartment complex near where Brown was killed, said she thinks about the shooting every day.

They will also stage a silent march to a church and hold a religious service. “But I’m trying to make it uncomfortable to people that think this is OK to do this stuff”, Brown explained to reporters on Saturday.
