Officer William Porter’s trial ended with a hung jury and a mistrial in December, while Officers Edward Nero, Caesar Goodson and Lt. Brian Rice were acquitted at bench trials in May, June, and July, respectively.
In addition to Miller, two other officers had upcoming trial dates-Sgt.
Six Baltimore officers were initially charged in Gray’s death.. The results are expected soon.
It also requires officers to render medical assistance.
Shouting into a microphone as she read from prepared remarks, Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby slammed the way police handled their investigation into the case.
In a passionate speech, Mosby said she’s not anti-police – “I am anti-police brutality”. Gray’s death sparked protests in Baltimore and throughout the country. Darden says police “lied, I know they lied, and they killed him”.
Justice has been done, Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police President Gene Ryan said Wednesday after charges were dropped against the three officers.
During his arrest, officers placed Gray in the back of a police van, which made several stops. Unlike with other cases where prosecutors work closely with the police to investigate what actually occurred, what we realized very early on in this case was police investigating police, whether they’re friends or merely their colleagues, was problematic.
Gray’s family received a $6.4 million settlement from the city.
September 8, 2015 – Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announces a tentative $6.4 million settlement between Gray’s parents and the city of Baltimore.
The day started with a pretrial hearing for officer Garrett Miller, who had faced charges of assault, misconduct and reckless endangerment.
Prosecutors claimed Gray was not secured with a seat belt in the van and said police did not provide aid when he asked to be taken to a hospital. He was handcuffed and shackled when he was hurt. She did not shy from the spotlight, posing for magazine photos, sitting for TV interviews and even appearing on stage at a Prince concert in Gray’s honor.
“This system is in need of reform when it comes to police accountability”, she said. The mayor has taken on a prominent role at the podium during the party’s convention in Philadelphia.
The Gray case never fit neatly into the narrative of white authorities imposing unfair justice on minorities.
Six officers were charged in the case. The judge lifted the gag order after the charges were dropped.
By the time the van arrived at the police station, Gray was unresponsive. The officers targeted by Mosby have since brought a civil suit against the prosecutor, and it remains to be seen whether the courts will conclude that her conduct was sufficient egregious to warrant piercing of the immunity normally provided prosecutors against such suits. He later pulled out. But reality seems to have sunk in at last and Mosby’s office announced this morning that the remaining trials will be cancelled and all remaining charges dropped.
