Man who shot President Reagan to be released from mental hospital

She was a student at Yale University at the time, and said that Hinckley had written her numerous letters before the shooting. I just heard about it two seconds ago. A judge ruled that he will be allowed to live with his elderly mother in Williamsburg, Virginia, as soon as next week. NPR justice correspondent Carrie Johnson has been following this case for years. He got off six shots. President Reagan’s injuries lift him hospitalized and in critical condition, but he eventually recovered. Another left then-White House press secretary James Brady paralyzed from the waist down. Brady survived but lived the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He can drive alone, but only within a 30-mile radius of Williamsburg, and the Secret Service will periodically follow him.

After an eight-week trial, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity on June 21, 1982, a decision that sparked public outrage, Efe news added.

Foster also appears in the movie starring as an underage prostitute.

After being held at a psychiatric hospital for over three decades, John W. Hinckley, Jr. will be released, a federal judge ruled today. He will have to work or volunteer at least three days a week, and if he fails to show up, his absence must be reported to the authorities. Hinckley was a “profoundly troubled 25-year-old young man” when he shot Reagan, the judge wrote, but has not exhibited symptoms of major depression or a psychotic disorder for more than 27 years.

MONTAGNE: Yet, setting free someone who tried to assassinate a president…

JOHNSON: It’s controversial, Renee.

While outside the hospital, Hinckley has had to comply with a series of restrictions, and some of those will continue.

He can not travel to areas where current or former presidents, Congress or senior executives or “United States Secret Service protectees” are found.

But Justice Department prosecutors have been leery.

“John Hinckley shouldn’t have been released”, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump said during a Wednesday press conference. There were many people who were skeptical that insanity was a legitimate defense after an assassination attempt on the American president….

He can not post any writings or memorabilia on the internet or display them in person without authorisation.

The court believes John Hinckley is no longer the threat he once was and that custodial care in a psychiatric facility is no longer necessary nor helpful.

Hinckley lawyer Barry Levine did not immediately respond to a request for comment. They note his mother is in her 90s.

“My father did more than say the Lords Prayer He lived it in forgiving John Hinkley Jr…Maybe we should do the same”, he tweeted.
