According to police, Sargent Craig Hutchinson radioed his fellow police to let them know someone fishy was prowling around his house.

“My deepest condolences go out to the Hutchinson family during this unimaginably hard time”, said Governor Abbott.

The $15,000 reward from the Office of the Governor is in addition to a $10,000 reward offered by the U.S. Marshals Service and a $5,000 award offered by Lakeway municipal Judge Kevin Madison, bringing the total award amount to as much as $30,000 for information leading to the arrest of the assailant or assailants in Sergeant Hutchinson’s murder. “This guy was a big teddy bear, and everybody loved him”. In his press conference this morning, Sheriff Greg Hamilton described Hutchinson as a “gentle bear”, who stood about 6 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed 270 pounds.

The Round Rock Police Department is leading the joint investigation with the sheriff’s office, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Round Rock Police tip line at 512-671-2767.

Just 54 years old, he lived in Round Rock and was a 23-year-veteran of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Hamilton summed it up by saying, “We are in a country that is morally bankrupt and value-depleted. and it’s going to take all of us to come together to address this particular issue”. There is no suggestion the shooting was an ambush, he said.

There were rolling delays on Interstate 35 as authorities moved the deputy’s body from Round Rock Medical Center to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s office in downtown Austin.

McNeil Road was closed while police investigated the scene.
