Wildfire on California’s Central Coast grows

BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) – A wildfire was fouling the summer season on a beloved and scenic stretch of the California coast, where smoke and the threat of flames forced the closure of state parks near Big Sur. Authorities said the blaze had grown to about 10,000 acres as of Sunday evening and was threatening 1,650 structures.
More than 1,300 personnel are battling the 23-square-mile fire, which is burning mostly out of control in hard-to-reach terrain.
The fire is 5% contained with no estimate of full containment. Fish did not have further details about the incident but said 60 bulldozers were being used in the fight against the fire.
The Community Foundation for Monterey County has created a fund in which contributions will be formed into grants for agencies to help residents affected by the fire.
The fire in rugged wilderness between the northern edge of Los Angeles and the suburban city of Santa Clarita has burned 58 1/2 square miles (152 square kilometers) and at its peak forced about 20,000 people to evacuate, though most have now returned.
Meanwhile, a second massive blaze is raging in southern California; the Sand fire has covered 38,000 acres in the Los Angeles area and is 40 percent contained.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department didn’t say whether the buildings that burned were homes.
