NBA All-Star Game Being Moved From Charlotte

After Charlotte lost the 2017 NBA-All Star game, the Hornets released a statement on behalf of the franchise and owner Michael Jordan expressing understanding of the league’s decision. Schools must prove they don’t discriminate with their facilities and operations before they can host a sanctioned NCAA tournament.

The league’s decision was first reported by the Vertical.

“Our message to the NCAA is that we have always been, continue to be and will always be an inclusive, very diverse, very open community”, said Edwards. The law known best for its restrictions on transgender bathroom access looms large in an election season that includes one of the nation’s most closely watched governor’s races.

The NBA has every right to pull their All Star game from my state of North Carolina.

Lawyers for the companies – including General Electric Co., Microsoft Corp. and United Airlines Inc. – wrote that the law “is already damaging their ability to recruit and retain a diverse workforce and is imposing a substantial disincentive to investment and commerce in the State, directly impacting their bottom line”.

As the initial news faded, fans began questioning why North Carolina was being punished so harshly when other states have similarly terrible laws.

The law passed in a March special session also excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from antidiscrimination protections related to the workplace, hotels and restaurants; and overrules local antidiscrimination ordinances.

Duke basketball and field hockey as well as UNC field hockey have all had to cancel games against Albany because of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order banning publicly funded, non-essential travel to North Carolina. As he did in his original statement on Thursday, he tried to suggest that North Carolina isn’t so different from other states. They announced that they are pulling the 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte in protest of HB2 and its discriminations.

NOLA.com | Times Picayune received a copy of the letter that Edwards sent to Silver on Friday: Edwards thanked Silver for strongly considering to bring the 2017 All-Star Game to New Orleans and said citizens of the state embraces the rich cultural heritage and sees diversity as a virtue. He also praised Charlotte’ plans that had been made for renovations, which included upgrading the infrastructure, suites and scoreboard – all of which have been completed or are close to being completed.
