Tesla’s new factory could almost double global production of lithium-ion batteries.
He told reporters that the upcoming Model 3 could generate US$20 billion revenue per year with roughly US$5 billion in gross profit once fully operational with the generation of half a million vehicles per annum. “There was nothing unexpected from our standpoint”.
Mobileye, a supplier of vision-based sensor chips for self-driving cars, has cited concern over the reputation of autonomous technologies following the ending of its supply deal with Tesla, likely due to the fatal crash involving a Model S in May.
“The success of the Model 3 is really dependent on the success of the Gigafactory here”, said Tim Stevens of CNET.
In an interesting turn of events, Mobileye disclosed during a recent earnings conference call that its multi-year partnership with Tesla is coming to an end.
Tesla which is one of the major companies to supply electric cars all over the world have started producing autonomous cars as well. When this is completed, it will cover an area equivalent to 107 NFL football fields.
Comma.ai is a startup that is working on an aftermarket self-driving vehicle kit that is expected to be released within the year.
Last week Musk unveiled an ambitious plan to expand the company into electric trucks and buses, vehicle sharing and solar energy systems. “We improved the people’s safety, not just in fatalities, but also injuries”, Musk said. “We continue to support and maintain the current Tesla Autopilot product plans”.

The opening of the Gigafactory follows the publication of CEO Elon Musk’s broader vision for the company. The factory is now about 14 percent complete; when it’s finished, it will be approximately 10 million square feet, or about the size of 262 NFL football fields. To make this happen, the companies will use the BMW iNEXT model. Galves went on to say that future generation EyeQ chips would process and act upon lateral movement data. That’s why Nevada has given Tesla $1.3 billion in tax breaks to put the factory here in the desert outside Reno.
